1938—Frank Capra, director—starring Lionel Barrymore, James Stewart, Jean Arthur
You Can’t Take It With You earned its producer-director Frank Capra two Oscars: one for Best Picture and one for Best Director. The play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, from which it was adapted, was itself a Pulitzer Prize winner. Lovebirds James Stewart and Jean Arthur come from two very different families: he is the son of ruthless business tycoon Anthony Kirby; and she is, apparently, the only normal member of Grandpa Vanderhof’s extended family of eccentrics, whose shared motto seems to be “do what you wanna do”.
When the Kirby family pays a visit to the Vanderhof family, worlds (as they say) collide.
