1944—Vincente Minnelli, director—starring Judy Garland, Margaret O'Brien, Mary Astor
Meet Me in St. Louis follows the domestic and romantic lives of the members of the Smith family of St. Louis, from the summer of 1903 through to the spring of 1904 with its eagerly anticipated World’s Fair. Although it took two turbulent years to produce, Meet Me in St. Louis repaid the efforts of all involved, becoming MGM’s most profitable movie since Gone with the Wind. It was a major early success for director Vincente Minnelli. Seven-year-old Margaret O’Brien won an Academy Juvenile Award for her astonishing performance as the Smiths’ youngest child, Tootie. And it introduced song standards “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “The Trolley Song”.
