1964—Robert Stevenson, director—starring Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke, David Tomlinson
Mary Poppins, based on P.L. Travers’s beloved children’s book series, is widely considered to be Walt Disney’s crowning achievement: it was the only Disney film to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination during his lifetime. Its remarkable animations in which live actors perform with cartoon characters earned it a Special Effects Oscar; and Julie Andrews, in her feature film debut, won both the Academy and Golden Globe awards for Best Actress. She, of course, played Mary Poppins, who arrives out of the blue (literally) to serve as nanny to the dysfunctional Banks family, in the course of which she magically restores familial harmony.
