1967—Stanley Kramer, director—starring Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, Sidney Poitier
Two things pulled people into movie theatres in 1967 to see Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. One was its honest but entertaining treatment of its subject matter: interracial marriage, which the US Supreme Court had only just declared unconstitutional that year. The second and, doubtless, more compelling reason was to see the reunion of Hepburn and Tracy, who had co-starred in eight films during the 40’s and 50’s, and whose love affair had been an open secret in Hollywood for 26 years. Critics and audiences alike were delighted to see them in one final match-up, and full of praise for their performances.
