1958—Richard Quine, director—starring James Stewart, Kim Novak, Jack Lemmon
Kim Novak, Jack Lemmon and Elsa Lanchester are members of a family of witches in New York City; James Stewart (in his last romantic lead role) is magicked by Novak into falling in love with her; twelve different Siamese cats take turns playing Novak’s familiar, Pyewacket; and Ernie Kovacs (taking a break from his busy life on TV) is hilarious as a bibulous writer who is never quite drunk, but never quite sober either. It was based on a Broadway play by John Van Druten, the author of I Remember Mama and I Am a Camera, which also became films. And it was one of the inspirations for the TV series Bewitched.
