1915—Charlie Chaplin, director—starring Charlie Chaplin, Edna Purviance, Lloyd Bacon
Charlie Chaplin created the costume for the Tramp on the spur of the moment for a 1914 Mabel Normand short. On his way to wardrobe, he decided that he “wanted everything to be a contradiction: the pants baggy, the coat tight, the hat small and the shoes large.” With the addition of a small mustache, an iconic character (“the little fellow”, as Chaplin called him) was born. The Tramp appeared in a couple of dozen short films before 1915’s two-reeler The Tramp, written and directed by Chaplin, in which his character is displayed in more emotional depth.
This silent film will be accompanied live by VFF favourite, pianist Jordan Klapman.
