1957—Stanley Donen, director—starring Audrey Hepburn, Fred Astaire, Kay Thompson
Funny Face, a romcom set in the fashion industry, has got everything one could look for in a musical comedy: great Gershwin tunes (including the American songbook standard “’S Wonderful”); striking visual style and colour; glorious Givenchy creations; the incomparable Fred Astaire (still going strong in his late Fifties); a master movie musical director behind the camera (Stanley Donen, a former dancer and choreographer); key production talent from MGM’s legendary Freed unit; and Paris. Plus, of course, Audrey Hepburn (also a former dancer), who had created the title role in the musical Gigi in its Broadway premiere before she became a movie star.
