1934—William Dieterle, Busby Berkeley, directors—starring William Powell, Bette Davis
The second of two musical comedies at this year’s Festival, Fashions of 1934 offers up “color, flash, dash, class, girls and plenty of clothes” (according to the movie trade magazine Variety). William Dieterle directs “a brisk show” (New York Times), starring William Powell and Bette Davis as fashion fraudsters; and there are several spectacular dance sequences staged by Busby Berkeley (famed for his work in 42nd Street, Gold Diggers of 1933 and others). Fashions of 1934 was just one of hundreds of films for which multi-Oscar winner Orry-Kelly designed the costumes between 1932 and 1963.
