1963—Federico Fellini, director—starring Marcello Mastroianni, Claudia Cardinale
Federico Fellini’s 8½ is another Best Costume Design Oscar winner: it’s a showcase of stylish Sixties Italian fashion (and it pulls a neat trick with it in the final reel). It also won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. Fellini made 8½ following a lengthy struggle to come up with ideas for his next film project. He suddenly decided to make a self-referential movie about that struggle. Even the film’s title reflects this, as it isn’t really a title at all: Fellini had already made seven features and one short film—seven-and-a-half films, if you like—so this project was Untitled Movie No. 8½.
8½ will be screened in Italian with English subtitles.
