1923—Buster Keaton, John G. Blystone, directors—starring Buster Keaton, Natalie Talmadge
Our Hospitality, whose story is driven by a Hatfield-and-McCoy style southern family feud, is one of the great Buster Keaton features, right up there with Sherlock Jr. (VFF 2024) and The General (VFF 2021). It integrates gags and slapstick, stunts and thrills, and fascinating 1830-period detail (including an authentic early train) into an integrated storyline that is dramatic as well as comic. (The cast of Our Hospitality is a family affair, too. It includes Buster Keaton’s father, Joe Keaton, as a locomotive engineer, Buster’s wife Natalie Talmadge as his love interest, and their baby, Buster Keaton Jr., as Buster’s character as a baby.)
This silent film will be accompanied live by VFF favourite, pianist Jordan Klapman.
