1932—Tod Browning, director—starring Wallace Ford, Leila Hyams, Olga Baclanova
Freaks, although it is often called a horror film, is truly an uncategorizable one-of-a-kind movie. With a cast largely comprising actual sideshow freaks (including armless, legless and completely limbless individuals, Siamese twins, a human skeleton, a bearded lady, and a number of dwarves and “pinheads”), Freaks shocked many audiences upon its release, was banned in Britain for decades, and was labelled “brutal and grotesque” in Canada. But it has also been called one of the “most compassionate” films ever made. Many of the freaks were siblings; in the movie, they collectively make up a unique “found family” which is threatened by the dark intentions of the circus’s “normal” performers.
