Joe and Jerry (Tony Curtis & Jack Lemmon) see a Mafia murder happening so plan to leave Chicago in fear for their lives. They join an all-female jazz band (disguised - although the cross-dressing got criticized) and head to Florida with the Mafia in hot pursuit. Along the way Joe gets involved with Sugar (Marilyn Monroe) while Jerry is pursued by a millionaire (Joe E. Brown).
