Los Angeles private eye J.J. "Jake" Gittes (Jack Nicholson) is hired by Evelyn Mulwray to investigate her husband's activities and he thinks it's simply a case of infidelity. However, it’s more complicated than that – for a start, he’s not been hired by the real Mrs. Mulwray (Faye Dunaway) but was hired by an imposter.
