Around the World in 80 Days, based on the Jules Verne novel, is said to hold the record for the most costumes ever (74,685—plus 36,092 “trinkets”) in a Hollywood production. 68,894 actors and extras, and 7,959 animals, were filmed in 112 locations in 13 countries. The film is a constant delight for vintage movie lovers as one golden age actor after another—dozens, all told—appears in a small role or cameo. This Oscar-winner for Best Motion Picture introduced English-speaking audiences to the delights of the great Mexican comedian Cantinflas (whom Charlie Chaplin once called “the world’s greatest clown”) as David Niven’s valet.
The movie features more than 40 celebrity cameo appearances, including Frank Sinatra, Buster Keaton, Marlene Dietrich, Peter Lorre, and Red Skelton, making it one of Hollywood's biggest all-star productions.
The film won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, becoming one of the most celebrated films of 1956.
No Stunt Double in the Ring - because of his actual past in bullfighting, Cantinflas completely eschewed a stunt double and performed the movie's intense bullfighting sequence live in the ring with a real bull.
During the production, the cast and crew famously accumulated over 4,000,000 passenger air miles to shoot on location across the globe.
